feet: get moving

Yesterday I put the dust cover on my sewing machine and packed my serger up into a box-bag combo that will hopefully help it survive yet another cross province move. Our little family has decided to get along, away from this beautiful island, in order to be closer to our extended families. We love it here. Let me say that again: we LOVE it here. But, small children need grandparents and aunties and uncles and cousins. They really do. And The Man and I could use some familiar faces and, frankly, a babysitter every once in awhile. So, Alberta bound we are.

We will be leaving the same way we came: with our two kids, two cats, one car and one roof rack. This next week is dedicated to once again de-stuffing our lives. We`ve secured a house in our new town, which is already furnished: we are learning the ways of the nomads.

Just because I`ve put away the machines does not mean I am taking another blog break. Frankly, taking a `rest` from the creative stuff is not particularly peaceful. I feel the need to create things the same way I feel the need to eat food and nap about two-ish. I`m sure I`m not the only one around here that feels that way :D

During this transition I will be taking on something completely new: a quilt! I have never done a quilt. Weird, huh? I plan on just cutting out and stitching together a thousand or so squares with some of the miles of fabric I have managed to accumulate during our time on the island. For the next few weeks, after I manage to get the squares cut out (seems like a good time to enlist The Man`s help), I will be embellishing some of them with thread, floss, beads, whatever, to remind me of this paradise and encourage me to come back to visit. I will have to hand sew the embellishments - a challenge for me - but I can do it during the drive and when the kids are playing together. I will also be finishing the slimster hipsters pattern and get it out there to you very soon :)

Now, on with the adventure.

  3. I just found your blog and I gotta say thanks for sharing and I plan to use some of your tutorials!! We just moved away from all of our family about 6 months ago and thats when I began sewing. I/we miss our family and friends and support group SO MUCH! I'm truly happy to hear you're moving closer to your family. Good luck with everything, I'm sure you'll have some great moving stories to share.

  5. Like Nik H we recently moved (well a year and a half ago now) away from friends and family and it prompted me to fill my time with more crafting. Selfishly I hope that when you are back amongst your F&F you will still have time for us because I do love seeing what you've made and reading about you all. But the nicer side of me just wishes you all the best for the move and your new home. Bon Voyage et Bon Chance

  6. If you haven't done a lot of embroidery type work I suggest you keep the fabric in pieces big enough to fit in a hoop while you work and then cut out the squares. I have found that working without the hoop produces lots of puckers unless I tension with my left hand which is ultimately painful. And moving to be close to family is great idea.

  7. I agree with diane to get a hoop, although, I know you can get the itty bitty ones in kids cross stich and tapestry kits here in Australia, so Im pretty sure they arent hard to come by, the kits are cheap too. But yes, good luck with the move, enjoy the hand sewing, Ive only recently discovered how relaxing it can be.

  8. I pray you/your family have a safe move.
I am also making a quilt but from whatever scrap pieces I could get a good sized square out of, I was going to suggest to do the embroidery first unless you have a tiny hoop on hand, but Diane beat me to it lol.

  13. I am happy for you! And torn... We moved from family and friends, across the US, 3 1/2 years ago so my hubby could go to school. Now as his schooling comes to a close we are trying to decide where to go next. Obviously, "home" and family (and baby-sitters) are calling to us and we are trying to make a wise decision before the summer (along with the lack of a job) arrives. I am an avid quilter (currently working on a rather pink and flowery quilt for my daughter) and just starting to get into sewing things for my children (you know, to keep them warm during the day too), which is why I am here so thank you! I need the help! :)
