Lately I've been fascinated by clothing created out of basic shapes, worn by people without the time, resources or desire for shape fitted clothing.
It came from reading a book about viking culture, my cultural heritage, but looking around a bit through time and history, theses basic styles have been with us always.
Loose, flowing tunics, capes and dresses made from basic blocks and rough curves are appealing for a number of reasons. First of all, they are simple to construct out of any sort of cloth. One garment can fit many different sizes and shapes of bodies. They are great for both warmth and for protecting the body from the sun without overheating.
And they are beautiful in their simplicity and ease. They speak of a life wear clothes are made for living in, not for living through. Functional and honest.
I really, really like this bib tunic on Birdie. The neutral toned linen is restful and the patterned bib front and sleeve cuffs hide the little dribbles and scuffs from food and felt markers.
I think Smootch needs a few additions to her wardrobe, to replace some of her outgrowns, as much as she loves them. I am almost sure that a bib tunic will look great with some leopard print tights as well as more traditional style of bottoms.
