I'm going to break my own rules here and do a 'not a tute' post. I'm feeling bad its been over a month since I've put up a tutorial. I've been busy, busy. Some sewing, some designing, and some putting together my very first, what I'm choosing to call, pattern zine.

I've been making use of my high school drawing classes skills and putting together a corset dress pattern for children's sizes 2T-6. Yes, I know there is already a free tutorial, but this is actually the bodice pattern piece, full instructions, and doodles of butterflies. Butterflies, people! Mostly it's a trial run with the pattern zine format before I put out my fair weather jacket pattern. And a million other ideas I have that simply must stop bugging me, leave my brain and go have a life of their own so I can get enough space up there to ponder more profound thoughts like, 'what should we have for dinner?'

So, with all of this, I really haven't thought terribly hard about tutorials lately. However, if y'all want to give me a hand, I will get a tutorial up next week. All you have to do is give me some ideas of what you would like to see here. Maybe serger techniques (faux pintucks, flat locking), pattern alterations (how to make a puff sleeve from a regular sleeve?), a dress or something you've seen on my other blog. Whatever you want to know. Leave a comment with your idea/request.

In exchange for your ideas, I will do a random number draw to declare someone a winner and send them a copy of my first born pattern zine. I hope to get it from the printers on monday, so I will make the draw on sunday night about 9:00 my time (that's would be about the time the kids will finally be in bed).

Okay, next will be back to our regularly scheduled programing. Looking forward to your suggestions!

  1. I'd love a tute on a matching outfit for a toddler girl and baby doll! :) Or anything else you'd like to do, but that's my idea!
I'm planning to make one of your circle skirts in the near future!

  2. I would love to see a fairly simple tunic for a toddler/preschooler. Although I love the previous poster's idea about matching kid/babydoll clothes too :)

  3. I'd love to see some cute boy clothes!

  4. I 2nd becky's comment. It's so hard to find cute boy clothes to sew--even harder to find tutorials on them. It seems a lot of tutorials out there are for dresses.

Or hats. My only attempt at sewing a hat for my son did not turn out well. It was misshapen and didn't even fit him very well.

  5. I'm just so glad to have found your blog! I love simple tops for children and right now I am into patchwork--dresses, skirts, bags, anything and everything. I don't have a boy to sew for, but I know that the others are right--there are not many boy things around. I'll just be waiting to see what comes out of your creative mind!

  10. I'd like to see a tute about *real* pin tucks--the kind that people used to use to extend the life of clothing as the child grew. I've got several little children in my life right now, and I would like to make clothing that could be adjusted a bit as they grow. If you're going to take the time to hand-make something, it would be nice if it could last a little longer.

  11. I got a serger from my Grandma when she died, and I don't know how to do anything other than serge. I would love a tute on how to do a rolled hem.

But really, every tute you do ROCKS and I would love anything!!! Thanks!

  13. Best of luck on your pattern-zine! I would love to learn about serger techniques. I got my serger this winter and I know only the basic operations on it. I haven't even tried to do a rolled hem yet!

  14. I'm a long-time lurker and admirer -- you do awesome work!!! I first found you on craftster and was in total awe of your patchwork twirly skirt, so I of course had to make one of my own (see it at http://dfwgreenbeans.blogspot.com/2007/07/yes-i-dress-my-daughter-in-old-sheets.html).

My request: Anything serger related! I just got one and don't even know where to start. How about a list of things you can do with a serger?

  19. now I've had some more time to think about it I would LOVE to know how to sew knit waistbands. what foot, needle etc, on a regular sewing machine. my girl is allergic to latex (so no elastic) and has severe eczema and hates anything rough on her skin.

  21. I really love your blog! As a novice sewer you make things easy for me to understand and it helps that your DD is just a little bigger than mine. I would love to see a tute on ruffles using a sewing machine not a serger...I've tried and they still look wonky and my clear elastic keeps rolling up.

  22. I'd like to see tutes for easy beginner stuff for baby girls-- clothing wise. I see lots of blankets, receiving blankets, etc. (squares). Then suddenly lots of detailed things with teeeeny tiny pieces. I'd love something in between to work on my skills!

  23. Hmmm... I'd love to see how to make your peasant shirt long sleeved... These alberta winters are going to kill me... and M's not allowed to wear pants after this surgery for a while! Also... hmmmm hmmmm what about tips & tricks, as I'm sure you've developed some? Like how to sew fakey furry stuff like Birdies snuggli suit? Lots of people are asking for a rolled hem tute. Maybe a step by step of some basics? Rolled Hem, Lettuce Edging, Ruffling, How to Match Patchwork? Oh, and BTW - WE LOVE YOU!

  24. I would like more of Smoochie's tutorial videos......really! Ok, I would also like a pattern for the elastic wrap pants......one that talks to me in baby steps, you know for the non-sewing person who does own a very unused and dusty sewing machine! Thanks!

    Warmly,
    Leslie G.
