rainbow quilt top

Have I mentioned that I have no idea what I'm doing with quilting?

I have two tops put together.  This rainbow stripped one is actually number two.  I loved doing the stripwork - so much like a patchwork twirl dress without the dreaded gathering.  So many fabrics from my years of sewing, I felt quite emotional at times thinking of when my children were babies and toddlers and wore something made from the fabrics.

But now I have to quilt the darn thing and I have no idea what I'm doing.

I've been waiting to get a walking foot, which by a series of odd events, has been delayed.  I tried machine quilting without the foot.  Fail.

I have no idea what I'm doing.

But here is an awful picture of the quilt top laid out right before I basted it together.  If I ever finish it, I will be in love with it.

  1. If you're really terrified, just go easy on yourself and do simple yarn ties throughout. It's fun to do while watching a movie :) Add a hand-stitched running stitch or even use your machine along the horizontal rows if you want to. Quilting is whatever you want it to be, in my opinion :) Imperfections are not to be feared.

By the way, I love this quilt! I sure hope you finish it. Have fun!

  2. That quilt is beautiful! I agree with Xenia, don't fear any imperfections. Quilting today is so overblown and perfectionist driven that it takes away from the original reason (and way) quilts were made.

  3. I have made plenty of quilts while not knowing what I was doing. :) they've all been loved by their recipients nevertheless! Go slow & remind yourself how much you are in love with the quilt top - you want that beauty out where you can cuddle with it, not in a closet awaiting the "someday" you will assemble it. It is a beautiful heirloom.
