On holiday. Sort of.

Last week we were 644, this week we are 2000+.

The Man had to travel for work, so the kids and I decided to tag along. The fact that there was a houseboat, owned by The Man’s boss, on the Shuswap lakes in British Columbia there for us to stay in helped with our decision. Don’t get too jealous, we are docked for the week and basically squatting here while the other houseboats are being hauled out of the lake around us and winterized, but it’s still a bit of adventure for us nonetheless.

I know I’m not supposed to announce on the internet that I’m away on holiday, but, in all honesty, the only thing valuable in my 644 is my two kitties who have an evening companion for food refills and scratches. Also, I have a neighbor who is not unfamiliar with vigilante justice and watchdog shenanigans, and we happen to be on good terms at the moment, so I’m not too terribly worried.

And what is there to worry about while we are here, in this amazing place of lakes, mountains and wolves? Well, yes, the wolves are worrisome. And cougars and bears and a badger or two that would give us pause. We’ve managed to keep our distance from some of larger predators, though, and the only animals that we have come into any sort of conflict with have been human desensitized, bread crumb begging ducks and gulls, who have snapped at Smootch’s fingers, believing her impolite for not sharing her trail mix.

As soon as The Man is finished up his work, we shall be heading back home, back to the grind and the dreary school run. I am enjoying this small siesta from the school, enjoying having Smootch back to read Lemony Snickett’s A Series of Unfortunate Events (we’re on book six now) to in the afternoons while Birdie takes a nap. I am glad that while Smootch officially attends public school, we still consider ourselves unschoolers and haven’t let the school get in the way of education.

  3. What a great way to put it. School doesn't mean the learning at home ends, it just means it happens earlier, later, and at totally random moments. A 2 hour bug hunt ended with my brother looking up everything we caught online for my niece, I think we learned just as much as she did. Hope the travelling school continues to be fun.
