This summer, between the nice weather, our new big backyard, and the kids next door, Smootch, Birdie and I have done virtually zero crafting.  Most of the past two months has been spent running around outside and developing some seriously close friendships.  It's been brilliant.

Not much to show here though.  Smootch does draw a couple pictures a day still, usually whenever she is forced to stay inside for a couple of minutes.  Her automatic reaction is to reach for her paper and crayons.  She does it the same way some people will flick on the tv or pick up a book when confronted with an unplanned period of time.  Though, due the influence of her new friends, instead of the princesses and flowers she was drawing a few months ago, she is now doodling pictures of hearts and Justin Bieber while singing Katy Perry's Teenage Dream.

I know, I know.  I feel like I've whiplash from this sudden intrusion of pop culture into our lives.  Still, even though I've tried, but I can't seem to stop her from growing up.  Oh, it gets worse too.  But I'll leave that for another day.

Smootch, despite her new tween status, is still a thoughtful and considerate person.  The boy next door recently turned ten years old and, as a present, Smootch honoured his love of scary movies and produced a this line of paper zombie for his birthday card:

I'm not sure how Smootch came up with version of a zombie, cape and all, but she hasn't seen any of those types of movies yet.  The scariest we've gotten is episodes of Ruby Gloom, a show that has got me thinking I should do some silhouette work on our new white walls.

I have been busy inside the house, sewing curtains and painting, and super busy with roller derby.  Derby is the sport that ate my life.  Like when I think back to the time before I had children, I can't imagine what I did with all my time before I joined derby.

For anyone itching for a tutorial this week, you'll have to head over to my derby blog and peruse my jersey fix.  I know trying to wrestle unflattering polyester sports jersey's into an attractive shape isn't every one's problem, but I love the idea of fixing misshapen garments with a bit of gathering.  Not only fixes, but adds some interesting detail.

Happy end of summer y'all.
