woe is me, a puzzle and a giveaway

Sorry, no project today - I'm on my way out the door to the dentist. I shall be spending the day creatively trying to avoid thinking about my poor extracted tooth. The upside is that sewing helps me forget about pain, so Smootch may actually get that long awaited ball gown she's been asking for :D

This is a craft blog, however, and a post - even one on to say that there isn't a post today - isn't complete without a picture of some type. Thus, a preview of an upcoming photo tute lite of a children's project.

Anyone have a guess as to what it is? If you think you know, leave a comment and I will do a draw tomorrow morning from the comments for a copy of the Lace Up Dress in it's new PDF format.

In the meanwhile, everyone who has fully functioning teeth, please take a moment to enjoy them. Eat something sticky and sweet for me :)

I have posted the answer this puzzling enigma here.

And the draw winner is...

Katie from Runaway October!

Thank you all for playing along and thank you also for the well wishes for my tooth. So as you know, I feel completely violated by my dentist and am suffering from post traumatic stress disorder over the whole thing. I want my tooth back! But I'm keeping pretty quiet about it because it is a minor, silly thing to get worked up over when there is so much suffering in the world now and every day. Still, where'd my ibuprofen get off to?

  1. Sorry to hear about your tooth!! hopefully the extraction will ease the pain!
Your photo looks to me like something that was made wet, then reconsituted, maybe like homemade paper, although it looks to thick.... almost like felted wool, but it doesn't have that "knotted" look, more "stacked". I'm stumped...but if either of my guesses were correct, I'll count them as my entries, k? (although I have serious doubts!)

  2. One more guess.... it looks like dryer lint compacted by wetting, then drying it. Correct???

  3. Totally looks like some kind of dryer lint "cake."

  4. If not dryer lint as mentioned above then attic insulation? Can't imagine what you could do with either...

  5. I agree with dryer lint, which is great for dryer lint playdoh, or home insulation. Or possibly cotton candy. :D

  6. I was going to say dryer lint as well, but I see everyone before me has the same answer.

    =)

  7. I see I'm not the first to guess that this looks like lint. But maybe I will be the first to link to a lint artist: http://www.heidihooper.com/lint.htm

  8. My first thought is some kind of compacted dryer lint!

  9. Hmmm.... Making building blocks out of dryer lint or wet felting them?

    VERY MYSTERIOUS!!!

  10. I say dryer lint too. And how cool would that be! I compost mine but that is rather boring.

  11. I think it's dryer lint... My sister makes really cool Halloween decorations with it... clearly I need to start separating my colors so I can have cool lint too...

  12. It looks like dryer lint, which would be cool, but odd in such amounts - you'd have to save for months!

  13. Hmm.. I wish I was more creative, but it looks like lint to me, too. We use ours as firestarters - mooshed into little tuna cans and covered with wax. Works great!

I'm eating double chocolate cookies with pecans in your honor. I hope your tooth is better soon!

  14. My guess was dryer lint (and I see now that it's a popular guess among other readers, too).

  15. That has to be dryer lint! I think the red/pinkish color of some of it gives it away.

  16. Yet a slightly less probable guess:
    Toilet paper.
    That's been in the laundry.
I'd love to have a use for that!
And by the way, thanks for everything.

  17. Dryer lint, which can be turned into handmade paper.

I don't know if someone else already said that, I didnt' read the previous comments! I promise! :)

I just found your blog last week, and I just LOVE it. Thanks for all of your crafty goodness!

  18. Oh, sorry about your teeth! Have you try some cloves infusion? It was Nanna's cure for everything! I would guess that it is insulation mats!?

  19. It looks like insulation or abused cotton batting to me. Teeth problems arre no fun, I hope this visit fixes your pain. :)

  20. Oooh, tooth problems are no fun! But better to have it taken care of than to let it fester.

Definitely looks like some sort of dryer lint paper mache project.

  21. I'll be honest, my mind went to drywall but I know that is wrong. Really I just liked the photo and Ramona's comment about having cool lint.

  22. I had three guesses, which have already been stated--homemade paper, felted wool, and dryer lint.
sorry about your tooth. Hope it goes well and you aren't in too much pain

  23. dryer lint!

by the way - i have friends who have tried to spin dryer lint into yarn - doesn't work.

  24. My guess was dryer lint too. But maybe its too obvious???

  25. I *did* think dryer lint as well but having read through the comments I feel like I'm being a copycat so I'm going to also say perhaps old blackboard dusters? Although I don't know that schools even use blackboards anymore...

  26. im glad im not the only one who thinks it looks like dryer lint cakes :D i also thought it might be homemade paper cakes or something as well.. strange. can't wait to find out what it really is!

    ReplyDelete
  27. Another one thinking lint, but boy it must have taken a while to collect that much!

    ReplyDelete
  28. I think dryer lint too. I have been saving mine for months now to make dryer lint clay.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Dryer lint for paper fibers?

So sorry about the tooth! I had my wisdom teeth removed a couple months ago, so you have my sympathy!

    ReplyDelete
  30. geez,i looked at it and said to myself "ooh ooh, i know i know! Lint!!!" then i saw I'm not original :)

  31. Good luck at the dentist! Since I haven't used a dryer in over six years, Dryer lint did not even cross my mind. But it definitely seems like a possibility. I'm going to go with paper pulp. Or is it pulped paper?

    ReplyDelete
  32. i'm guessing homemade paper (perhaps made from dryer lint, like everyone above guessed?).

    ReplyDelete
  33. My first thought was dryer lint, but I think that is too obvious. It reminds me of paper that you forget to take out of your pocket and end up washing and drying. Hubby says it looks like insulation. So my guess is that it's wool insulation. What you would make out of that is beyond me at this point, but I know I will be pleasantly surprised.

  34. Paper making with dryer lint? Oh, I have SO wanted to try that!! I've been saving my best dryer lint but haven't done a thing with it yet! Can't wait to see your post about it, whatever it is!

I sure hope everything went okay with your tooth and your recovery is quick!

  35. You know how a piece of paper that is in a pocket thats run through the washer and dryer looks when it comes out? Well it looks like satcks of that done on purpose!

    ReplyDelete
  36. I'm thinking it looks like stuffing from pillows or cushions. I hope your tooth feels better soon.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I forgot to put my other guess down...magic erasers that have been used...probably for crayon off the walls if your kids are like mine.

    ReplyDelete
  38. wow. i thought this was cotton candy! =O
anyways, good luck with the dentist! (they scare me so much!)

    ReplyDelete
  39. Hmmm, some kind of chunky papermaking/felting?

    ReplyDelete
  40. How terrible the pain of a tooth can be! I'm sorry to hear that you're having an extraction.
Initially I thought it looked like cotton candy, but then I realized it looked a lot like dryer lint. We used it in all kinds of stuff last year including bird house padding, firestarters, and paper. Can't wait for the reveal!

    ReplyDelete
  41. I think it is home made paper pulp. or wet felted yarns.

    ReplyDelete
  42. oooh for sure dryer lint! (I'm the only one in my house to ever see it, despite the fact that my husband calls himself "Laundry Boy" in a superhero tone of voice!)

Extracted teeth are no fun! May I suggest White Willow Bark made into a tisane if you can tolerate hot?

  43. My guess is dryer lint, too, but I"m thinking you need to clean it our more if you are letting it get that thick!

    ReplyDelete
  44. recycled paper? I made that as a kid a couple times and it was a blast. Hope your tooth feels better!! I avoid the dentist at all costs, he usually has bad news for me........

    ReplyDelete
  45. My only guess is insulation, but since that is not child friendly, I'm sure everyone else is right with the dryer lint idea. And that intrigues me greatly! Can't wait to see what it is. Hope your day at the dentist wasn't too bad. No fun!!
