Smootch's Little Me

Before we begin, I must make sure that you have indeed read Neil Gaiman's Coraline.   If not, I'll wait until you pop out to your local library, check out a copy and treat yourself to a long latte.

There is also a movie that is pretty fabulous too.

Okay, ready?

I love to tease Smootch that I am, in actual fact, her Other Mother, but she doesn't believe me.  She thinks I'm the regular one who is mean to her and ignores her.  Perhaps.  But I still couldn't resist making Smootch her very own little me.  Whether or not it helps me keep tabs on her remains to be seen.

The pattern came from Yesterday's Trash etsy shop.  You should go there now and purchase your own pattern because you know you are going to want to make one too.

Some random photos of the making of Smootch's little me.  Sometimes doll making is delightfully creepy.  Button eye girl here, even more so.

And finally some pictures of the doll.  She is made of reused linen (the bottom cuffs of a pair of pants I helped a friend hem actually), acrylic for the hair, polyester knit fabric dress (the same as the Spitfire dress made for Smootch and there is a pattern for somewhere on my etsy shop that hasn't been open for... millenia).  I painted on the stripped leggings and pink shoes, along with eyebrows and lips.

Smootch is quite happy with her little me, adding a pair of her earrings to her to finish her off.

  2. I love this! I think I'll make one (not for a kid, for me) because the pattern looks like it could be kind of a rag doll equivalent of a Blythe (and I really want one of those). Very cute!

  3. I love Coraline, love Stuffed magazine, and love your doll!

I've been wanting to make a Little Me for my own daughter for a long, long time so I'm totally buying this pattern and doing it now.

    Yours is fabulous!

  6. You've out done yourself! You killed on the details and have made one fine doll.

  7. Thank you for letting me know about coraline!

Arrived at the top of the library holds list, devoured it and prepared to share it at the appropriate age...

My mom and I always had a joke about the other mother, so it will be interesting to have a new version (spookier)

What age did smooch encounter coraline?

  8. Nicole,

Smootch first saw coraline the movie by mistake when she was about 5 years old. Dad thinks he can just throw on any animated show it will be kid friendly - NO SO! Still, she seemed fine with it (she's a pretty dark kid at times) but I still would of rather read it to her first (I can moderate the 'scary' aspects with my tone of voice and, of course, she's imagine it as scary as she needs it to be).

Have fun with this. I think I loved the Coraline story more than Smootch. I also really liked the message that even if you are scared you can still do it and we revisit that theme often as we encounter our everyday little traumas and fears.
